This is one GREAT cat!! Minka is a sweet, sweet, sweet short-haired tortie that I recently rescued. She’s been a stray/abandoned pet in my neighborhood and once I learned of her, I lured her with food. I cannot keep her because I’ve already got a full house pet-wise, but I will foster her until I find a new home for her.
I’m telling you - this is one awesome cat! She’s sweet while also being curious, she’s smart enough to pick up on your patterns and understands “no”. She likes to cuddle and be pet, but she doesn’t beg for attention (I have 2 like that, I can’t sit at the computer without them competing for my lap!) Minka is the whole package! She’s truly an awesome cat. I would keep her if I could.
Small in stature, but a big heart Minka is a petite kitty, slightly smaller in stature than my cats, with a slim build. She’s in good shape for a stray (she’s not emaciated or scrawny) and her coat is in good shape (she was getting regular meals from a kindhearted neighbor who couldn’t take her in but didn’t want to see her starve). She as a delicate way of walking and a tiny little meow.
Temperament & “Cuddle-ability” Minka is a loving & affectionate. She is gentle and sweet - she let me hold and pet her immediately after I got her into my house. She has never tried to bite or scratch me, in fact, because I hadn’t encountered her claws within the first 3 days I had her, I wondered if she’d been declawed (she has NOT been - she’s just gentle). She likes to snuggle in my lap and will purr as I pet her, but she doesn’t beg for attention. She's independent enough to occupy herself, but has let me snuggle with her almost every time I've tried to.
Curious but compliant She’s curious and smart - she has a curious, inquisitive way of walking around her new environment. But she’s also compliant… I’ve told her “no” when she’s ventured in a direction of the house I don’t want her going to and she comes back towards me every time. I say she’s smart because she’s learned the routine I’ve adopted when tending to her and the other stray. After I feed them I put her at the window so she can look outside while I scoop the box, sweep, fill water dishes etc; then they each get some individual petting time - she comes to me when its “her turn” to be cuddled and then, after her turn, goes and lays in her bed, anticipating my next action (which is to leave the room).
Other pets and kids She has shown she can get along with other cats. I rescued a 2nd stray the same day I rescued her and she spent her first 6 days with the other stray in the guest bathroom and they did just fine together. Of course every cat has its own personality, and these two knew each other “from the streets”, but they shared the space peacefully and without incident. She also does ok with my cats. There has been some hissing and growling (which is to be expected), but this has lessened each day. There haven’t been any fights or aggressive behavior from her. She doesn’t test their boundaries, but she also isn’t a pushover. After having her 9 days and slowly introducing her to my cats, she’s now able to wander freely in the house.
She may also do ok with a family that has a dog. The neighbors that were feeding her had a small dog. They said that the two got along ok and that Minka never scratched or bit the dog.
She has been handled by a few school age children & teens since she’s been with me and she’s had no issues. She’s not bit or scratched anyone when handled. She does communicate when she’s ready to be out of some one’s arms or out of their laps, and we’ve honored that - but she’s not aggressive or cantankerous when letting us know (I’m telling you, this is a very sweet cat).
Good litterbox habits? Yes! She has used the litterbox without exception since I brought her home. The other stray I rescued the same day I rescued her hid in the litterbox all night, so she had an excuse to go outside the box, but she didn’t. I took him out of the litterbox when I checked on them in the morning and she ran in to do her business, so she’d been holding it until the box was free.
Microchipped Minka was implanted with a microchip at a local vet hospital. This vet has offered to assist the person that adopts Minka to get this chip registered in their name. Based on information from this vet, Minka is likely 7-8 years old. Unfortunately due to a clerical error, they can’t locate her vet records (they believe a number on her microchip ID was typed incorrectly, so they have her vet records, they just don’t have them linked to her chip ID). She is a stray, so I’m not aware of her vaccinations status. The adopter will hopefully take her to their vet and get her up to date. I’m assuming she is spayed, but I do not know this for certain. However given that she’s been a stray for several months and she’s not currently pregnant, I’m assuming she’s spayed.
Indoor only recommended Minka looks longingly out the window. I don’t know if she’d run off if let outside, but I’d advise a prospective adopter to keep her as an inside only pet if that is possible.
